Monthly Award Winners
Congratulations to the following students for winning a Lakeview Student of the Month Award for January.
100th Day of School
We recently celebrated the 100th day of school! Students brought in a collection of 100 items. We counted them on a grid divided into 10's.
Heart Race
In this activity, students rolled a dice and subitized (identified without counting) or counted the number of dots, and coloured in the corresponding number of hearts. Working in pairs, the students both tried to fill in their whole page!
Art Gallery Visit
We had a visit from a Niagara Falls Art Gallery artist and used oil pastels to create a dinosaur landscape. We identified and added shapes to our creations.
Learning Literacy Skills
We are continuing to build upon our early literacy skills daily in the Kindergarten program, through a variety of play-based and teacher-guided activities.
These students are matching letters to our letter and sound wheels.
This student is building words using our letter cubes.
This student is practicing reading to the class, using our story wands to "retell the story"!
Some of our students love to write in their journals at free time.
This student is building a tower with our word cups.

Busy Builders
As usual, the students have been enjoying constructing structures using various types of blocks and materials.
Numbers, Numbers, Numbers
We have been focusing on Number Sense and Numeration in our classroom. The Educators have provided many different learning opportunities for students to subitize (recognize an arrangement of dots or objects without counting), add numbers together, and make different combinations to 10.
In the following pictures, students were invited to play a game of Dot Card Memory. They had to match different arrangements of dots that represented the same number.
Students were matching the numeral to the corresponding number of dots.
In this activity "Snowman Makes 10", students rolled a dice and put the corresponding number of cotton balls on the paper. We recorded the different ways we made 10, and looked for similarities and differences. Students could be heard saying "I need a 6 because I already have 4" and similar utterances.
In the activity "In and Out", students emptied a cup of 10 cubes onto a paper that contained a circle labelled "in". They counted and wrote down how many cubes landed inside the circle and then how many landed "outside" of the circle. Students constructed addition statements such as "5+5=10".

We have been exploring a number line. In this activity, the students were given a numeral and asked to find it's spot on the number line. Some students were going directly to where their number was located, showing a knowledge of where numbers fall on a number line.

Our Own Illustrator!
The class was singing the song "Bringing Home my Baby Bumblebee". One student decided to illustrate the song. Wow - we love to see the learning continue after the initial exposure.
Radical Reading!
Our students have been busy reading with the Educators and on their own. Have a look at some of the ways the students have been practicing.
Amazing Artists
The students have been sketching owls with Mrs H in Art Class. What an amazing job they have been doing. They are impressing us by their effort and care with their creations.
The students have also been busy painting in the classroom, and were asked to describe their painting.

White Day
What a fabulous level of participation in our monthly colour days. Can you guess the colour we were representing this month?
Congratulations
Congratulations to a student who received her popcorn award for identifying all of our Kindergarten High-Frequency words. She is well on her way to knowing many of the Grade One words as well. Fantastic work!
