Although we talk about this topic daily, we will be concentrating on 2D and 3D shapes over the next month. We began with a discussion on the characteristics of some 2D shapes and students sorted classroom objects into the correct category. Students gave a thumbs up or thumbs down if they agreed with a students choice.
The students noticed a variety of shapes on a table one day. They were different sizes and colours. The students were invited to create a picture using the shapes. The students named their picture. The teachers were impressed with their creativity!

New Materials
We were lucky enough to purchase some new materials for our classroom. The students have been busy exploring these new manipulatives!
Olympic Mania
The students in our classroom were VERY interested about the Winter Olympics. We introduced a Olympic Vocabulary Word Wall and students kept themselves very busy by making medals, labelled with "their sport". Students were invited to use tweezers to sort pom-poms into the corresponding coloured Olympic ring.
How far will it go?
In science, the student had the opportunity to investigate friction. They were testing if a car would roll farther on a smooth surface (tiled floor) or a bumpy surface (carpet). We used blocks and other ramps during our investigation.
The 100th Day of School
We recently celebrated the 100th day of school! Students brought in a collection of 100 objects, and we counted them by dividing them into groups of 10. We decorated crowns and tried to print our name as many times as possible within a 100 second time limit.
Congratulations to our First Popcorn Award Winner!
Congratulations to the first student this year who has earned their Popcorn Word Award! This student identified all 30 Kindergarten Sight Words within a 2 second time limit. Way to go!
The Niagara Falls Art Gallery
Mrs. Lori from the Niagara Falls Art Gallery visited our classroom. The students had the wonderful experience of working with clay to create a 3D penguin. We have some amazing artists in the making!
The Itsy Bitsy Spider
Mrs. Powell (substitute EA) was in the classroom one day and showed the students a puppet she had made to accompany the song "The Itsy Bitsy Spider". The students were invited to make their own puppet.
Working with Watercolours
The students have been busy creating art with watercolour paints. Students were invited to name their painting (as real artists do!) and they helped to create a label to hang with their paintings.
